What are Adaptogens?

Adaptogens

Natural solutions to help reduce the effects of stress on your body

Adaptogens, huh? Seems like everybody is talking about them, and so it’s probably time to start understanding what they are. And at all Phenoms, we want to make better health simple, so we've done the research for you.

A Bit of Background

Adaptogens are simply a non-toxic class of herbs and mushrooms that help you “adapt” (as the name goes) and reduce the effects of stress on your body. They’ve been used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for a variety of ailments. The term "adaptogen" was first termed in 1947 to describe substances to help build and strengthen the body's defense systems. They were formally defined in 1968 and have been the subject of numerous studies as people look to natural solutions for health and have since been written about everywhere from Time Magazine to Healthline and Forbes.

How do Adaptogens Work

Adaptogens work by increasing the body’s resistance to physical, biological, and chemical stress through the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis (HPA axis) which connects your brain to your hormone system.  When your body is in a state of stress from things like daily life, work, injury or environmental causes, the stress hormone cortisol is released and your levels can become out of sync.

Adaptogens help in this process to stabilize these swings, regulate production and help bring your body back into an equalized state so that it can effectively address stress as it was naturally designed to do.
